February 2016

Dear Friends

Lent and Easter are coming early this year, with Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday 10th February.

Many people still like to ‘give something up’ for Lent, with a variety of  motives. I suppose we could summarise the original motive as this – that Christians want to show (themselves as much as anyone else!) that they aren’t slaves to bodily desires and compulsions, but want to have the self-control and inner freedom to effective  be servants of God. However, quite often, when we try ‘giving something up’, we find it more difficult than we had imagined, and realise how weak-willed we are. Happily, in Christian faith this isn’t a reason for despair, but something to drive us back to God again – admitting our frailty, asking for his help, and trying again. So, whether we ‘succeed’, or whether we ‘fail’ in our Lenten abstinence, God can make it an opportunity for us to come closer to him and trust him more.

Other people like to ‘take something up’ in Lent: when I was at training college, one fellow-student announced that she was going to ask to tea the people she found annoying – so we all hoped not to get an invitation! But, more seriously, Lent is a good period of time in which to think more about our faith, so that we can celebrate Easter with deeper conviction and joy when it comes. I would like to offer the opportunity for anyone from the Camps or Horseheath who would like to join us to come to a Lent Course of discussions on the Christian Creeds. There will be two meeting times each week, to accommodate those who prefer evening meetings, and those who find daytime easier. They will be Wednesday evenings 7.30- 9 pm , from Feb 17th to March 16th, at 38 Symonds Lane, Linton (by kind invitation of Lesley and Andrew Gore), and 10.30 – 12 pm on Thursdays in Linton Church or Church Pavilion, starting on Feb 18th. (continued over)

(continued) Participants will need to purchase a booklet costing £5.99. Please be in touch with me (email and telephone number below) if you would like to take part.

It may be that already-existing study groups would like to follow the same course of discussions, which is quite possible. All the input  needed for each meeting is in the booklets, though there is also the possibility of purchasing some recordings of some of the material, to vary the presentation. The booklet is taken from the Church of England’s ‘Pilgrim Course’ (www.pilgrimcourse.org), if you would like to learn more about it.

The Carol service held on 13th December was led by Rev Michael Wilcockson. We are lucky to have some wonderful musical talent in our villages and would like to thank them and everyone who read the lessons for their contributions. The collection raised £149.10 for the Salvation Army, Haverhill.

Our Christmas service was the perfect way to begin that wonderful day. It’s so special to see the Church full of different generations of the same family attending Church together and Malcolm Guite gave us an extremely thought provoking sermon.

The St Mary’s Christmas Coffee Morning held way back on Saturday 28th November was a lovely way to begin the season of Advent. Many thanks again to everyone who donated delicious cakes, gave their time to help or run a stall and especially those who came and spent their hard earned money. We made a healthy £368.30 profit which really helps the Church so thank you very much.  KK
