News & Events

The disaster wasn’t a total surprise: the squat Norman tower had been giving trouble for years. But the enormity of the destruction! A miracle that no-one had been killed. On February 22nd, 1322 the central tower of Ely Cathedral collapsed. A disaster – but to Alan de Walsingham, Sacristan (Clerk of Works of the Cathedral), the cold Fenland light that streamed through the vast hole in the roof was the light of God - lighting up a great opportunity.

Alan could visualise the square space of the tower being replaced by a much larger space. It would be an octagonal one & then he’d erect another octagon above it. It would be a great lantern to carry God’s light into the dark heart of the building.

Nearly 700 years later, that Lantern still hovers high above us. He built it from eight massive oak trees, each 48 feet long, suspended by a complex system of delicate thrusts & balances. It was a work of engineering genius that still amazes us. At the centre of his masterpiece, Alan placed an enormous figure of Christ in Glory. He wanted to show that God brings good out of bad; that in Christ He turns disaster into triumph, death into life; & that Christ is at the heart of Ely Cathedral, of all its life & worship.

We are greatly blessed to have one of the world’s finest cathedrals as our own Mother Church. Do go & look at it!
