News from the Anglican churches of Castle Camps, Shudy Camps and Horseheath

October 2015

Dear Friends,

Team Walking and Worshipping

On September 6th, about 25 people had a glorious afternoon walking from All Saints', Castle Camps, to St Mary’s, Bartlow via St Mary’s, Shudy Camps. In fact, more than 25 people were involved because some started out with us and then had to ‘peel-off’, whilst others joined at Shudy Camps; and that’s not to mention the generous folk at Shudy Camps and Bartlow who were waiting for us with tea and cake.

We prayed in each church for the village and for the church within it, so the event had a bit of a feeling of ‘pilgrimage’ as well as friendly exercise in lovely countryside and golden weather. I hope that people from across the different parishes got to know each other a bit better. As Team Rector, one of my aims is to re-build team relationships between the different parishes.

Our next Team Walk will be on Sunday 4th October, leaving St Mary’s, Linton at about 14:30 (after a bring and share lunch for harvest), walking across the Roman Road to Horseheath. I do hope that friends from south of the A1307 will join us.

Another Team initiative is to have some special services together: on November 1st at 18:00 at All Saints', Horseheath, Linton’s church choir will come and sing Evensong for the Feast of All Saints. Incorporated in the service will be commemoration of those we have loved and lost, as it is also the eve of All Souls’ Day.

Sharing the Bible’s Message with Children

In my previous parish, we very successfully had a team of people who shared in presenting bible stories in primary school assemblies in a lively way, through simple drama and mime. It was part of a national scheme called ‘Open the Book’, and is very easy to take part in (you don’t necessarily have to learn lines, and it's the greatest of fun).

Do you have a bit of free time during the school day, the willingness to let down your hair a bit to show how rich and engaging a book the Bible is and to bring assemblies to life for the kids?

I would like to get together such a team to offer this wonderful scheme to local schools several times a term. Christians of any background are welcome to join in.

There would be a need, too, for people to run up very simple costumes and find props.

There will be an opportunity to be trained in the New Year – so do let me know if you might be interested in exploring this. My last team was made up almost entirely of active pensioners, but younger people without work commitments (or with flexible ones) are very welcome, too.

Best wishes from your Team Rector

The memorial service held on the 16th of September for Hetty Frensham (very kindly conducted by Graham Ridgwell) was a beautiful service of reflection and remembrance. It gave all of us an opportunity to remember Hetty with love and fondness. Thank you Graham.

The Love in the Box shoe boxes will need to be at Linton for blessing at the church service  on the 1st of November. If anyone needs help in getting these to Linton please let Lindi Kent know on 01799 594 012.  LK

Shudy Camps Harvest Supper will be held in St Mary’s Church on Saturday 3 October starting at 19:00. The meal will be a choice of meats with salad and potato or a vegetarian option. This will be followed by seasonal sweets like delicious apple pie or fruit crumble. It is open to everyone and is a wonderful opportunity to meet up with friends and neighbours. Tickets cost £12, please contact Rachel Furner 01799 584 164 or Robert Manning on 01799 584 493. The proceeds will be in aid of St Mary’s Church and a raffle for The Children’s Society.  RM

Romanian Christmas Boxes

Colleen and Derek Lockstone from St Mary's, Linton are planning to send  boxes of Christmas presents for children and old people  to Romania in time for Christmas again this year.

They write, "We would be very grateful for contributions from the three churches  as we have received in previous years. As we have to take the boxes to the  London depot prior to the long lorry journey to Romania, boxes will need to be collected towards the end of October."

Most of the children are severely disabled, abandoned by their parents and have minimal support from the authorities so a box from you will be the only Christmas present they will receive. If there are any queries please phone Colleen or Derek at 01223 891 931.
