A Poem a Day for Advent

Advent begins on Sunday 29th November. For many of us it can seem a frantic time, preparing for Christmas with family and friend; for others, it may seem  extra lonely.

Many people would like to carve out time to reflect  during Advent; that’s why I’m  inviting anyone who finds poetry helpful to join us at St Mary’s, Linton, in reading a poem a day, together with a short commentary on each one.  It could take just five minutes, but give plenty of food for thought. There’ll be the opportunity  for readers to meet together to discuss what we got out of the poems.

The poems are in a book called "Waiting on the Word" (Canterbury Press, £10.99, available from all book retailers or available at the first meeting) which my husband, Malcolm Guite, has compiled . They come from a wide spectrum of writers and eras. The book’s primary purpose is devotional, for Christians, but not all the poems are explicitly religious, and sympathetic poetry-lovers of other persuasions might well get something out of it, too.  People find Malcolm an engaging speaker and writer, who gets to the roots of a poem’s meaning, and enriches  understanding in an  accessible way.

Meetings to discuss the poems will be on Wednesday evenings 7.30 pm in St Mary’s, starting on November 25th when Malcolm will introduce the book before Advent begins . He will also have some copies to sell. Meetings will continue on Wednesdays till  December 16th, with Malcolm able to be with us on December 9th. On the other evenings, we can share our experience of the reading and enrich each other with our own insights.

The trip to Charterhouse on the 24th of September was a great success. Fifteen of us were welcomed most warmly by the Deputy Master, Robin Isherwood, and given a fantastic historical tour of the house and gardens with tea afterwards. Thank you to all who came and made this a lovely trip and also to Robin for his hospitality. Link to pictures of the trip.

The Remembrance Service on the 8th of November is to be conducted at the URC Castle Camps at 10:00, continuing at the War Memorial at 11:00 and then processing to the RAF Memorial. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the village hall. All most welcome to all or some of the service.  LK
