No sun - no moon!
No morn - no noon -
No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day.
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member -
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! -
November!

Very different from this sunny November day – but when Thomas Hood wrote his poem, smoke from coal fires was belching from millions of chimneys.  Those were the days of the “London Particulars” – yellow fogs so thick that quite literally you couldn't see a hand in front of your face.

Where would it all end? they asked.  And what about all the horse manure?  All those carts and carriages coming into the city every day!  A Victorian scientist calculated that – unless there were dramatic changes – by 1950 the streets of London would lie buried beneath a hundred feet of horse manure.

But there were dramatic changes: in this case, the invention of the horseless carriage.  Later the Clean Air Act cleared away the fogs and smogs, but the horseless carriages of our day pollute our cities in a different way and now we fear Global Warming.  Hopefully our grandchildren will inherit a healthier world – but we may need to welcome dramatic changes – solar panels, wind & wave power (all God’s gifts to us) – to achieve it.

All blessings

We remember in our prayers all those in our villages suffering from illness  or other problems, and pray for healing and comfort in their distress.  This  month we pray for Marion and all those bereaved by the passing of Tony Welch.  May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

We welcome into the family of the Church Alfie Argent and Sidney Brown, baptised this month.  If you would like a visit or any information about our churches and their activities, I will happily come to see you – or you could come to the Vicarage.  Give me a call and we’ll arrange it.
