News & Events

The kiss of the sun for pardon,

The song of the birds for birth,

You are nearer God's heart in a garden,

Than anywhere else on earth.

This month we have Open Gardens Day in Castle Camps, when we can all enjoy the privilege of seeing the wonders usually hidden behind hedges and fences.  Somebody said, You don't have a garden just for yourself - you have it to share.  The pleasure and appreciation of others is part of the reward for all the hard work.  And it is hard work - but it’s a partnership between God and us.  God has given us a wonderful environment, but it’s up to us to look after it and pass it on in good order to the next generation.

The little verse at the top of the page is often carved on stone in people’s gardens - but my favourite garden poem is by Kipling.  It reminds us our partnership with God – and that gardens don’t happen without a lot of effort!  This is some of it:

Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing: “Oh, how beautiful!” and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel-paths with broken dinner knives.

There’s not a pair of legs so thin, there’s not a head so thick,
There’s not a hand so weak and white, nor yet a heart so sick,
But it can find some needful job that’s crying to be done,
For the Glory of the Garden glorifieth every one!

All blessings,

Due to bad weather, the Plant Sale was moved to the Village Hall & held on Sunday 11th May.  Thanks to Susie Culpin for making the hall available at such short notice and to all who gave up their time to make this a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon.  The proceeds towards the restoration fund was over £660.

The work on the interior of the church is well underway &  the work on the outside buttresses has now been started.  Some pictures on the website show the work in progress.

Thank you to all who supported our Garden Party.  It was a glorious afternoon and £710 was raised; less expenditure a profit of £535 went into church funds for the upkeep of our building.  Thanks also go to Jim for the use of his garden - the perfect setting!

The Bells are now at Whitechapel Bell Foundry.  Sorry I cannot give you a return date yet but, when the Bell Hangers came to remove them, the floor of the Tower just crumbled away and so we have to replace the floor before their return.  This should be within the next month to six weeks.  PS

We were very sad to hear of Milly Beavis’s passing and we know she will be greatly missed.  She was a faithful helper of the Church for many years and always took an active interest in the activities of the village.  Her funeral was on May 16th.

May she rest in peace and rise in glory.  RLM
