One morning a Swedish chemist opened his paper & was horrified to read that he was dead!  His obituary read:

Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite died yesterday. He devised a way for more people than ever before to be killed in war, & he died a very rich man.

He’d never thought of himself like that before. It was a different Nobel who had died & the newspaper had made a mistake - but that obituary had a profound effect on him. He didn’t want to be remembered as the man who got rich by killing people; so he did something about it: he changed his will to set up a trust, whereby money would be awarded each year to people who promoted peace.  Today when we hear the name Nobel we are less likely to think of dynamite, than of the Nobel prizes.

Later he wrote, “Every man ought to have the chance to correct his obituary in midstream & write a new one.”  Suppose you could read your obituary tomorrow, what do you think it would say?  What would you want it to say? If the two aren’t the same – even if you’re not a multimillionaire – you’ve still got time to do something about it!

Friends of All Saints

Well, the weather stayed fine for most of the morning & the Plant Sale on Saturday the 11th of May has raised £762 so far. Many thanks as always for the hospitality of Alan & Jean Hardy - & so good to see Jean back home from hospital; also thanks to all those who came & made this such a success.

We are now looking forward to our Open Gardens on Sunday the 30th of June. This is always a good village event; let’s hope for good weather! Please invite all your friends & come & support us.

A reminder of other planned events for this year:

BBQ - Sunday 4th August - in The Schoolings garden from 4.00pm on.

At last South Cambs District Council will be replacing the Path from the Entrance Gate to the Church later this Summer.  This is good news, as it has been in a very poor state for some time. PS

Building work: The outside stonework repairs to the Church are now complete & work has started on cleaning & repairing two of the wall monuments at the top end of the Church . We are letting the wall plaster behind the altar dry out until the autumn when we plan to redecorate the top end of the church (if we have enough funds).

We hope shortly to install safer access (ie a decent bespoke ladder) up to the “balcony” at the back of the Church where the tables etc for village events are stored.  This project is being generously supported by the Parish Council.

Messy Church celebrating Father's & Grandfather's Day with the Noah's Ark story on Sunday 16th June at 3pm at Mill Green House. Storytelling with puppets, Rainbow making, Ark painting followed by a celebration Tea. Please bring a picnic rug.  All Ages welcome from 0-100!

Strawberry Fair Saturday 6th July 2013 from 2pm-5pm at St Mary's Church, Shudy Camps. Stalls, teas, raffle & Teddies will fly from the Tower by parachute. (Sqn Ldr Roger hopes to be in attendance).

If anyone would like to bring flowers (for a vase) in memory of a loved-one, we plan to display it in the church.  Come & join us for a lovely afternoon.  We hope that the weather improves for it! RM
